Many seek a connection with nature, but few understand that true belonging isnโt just about being in a placeโitโs about becoming part of its story. The land carries wisdom, a silent pulse of ancient energy๐ซ that can either embrace you or remain indifferent. To truly belong, you must listen, honour, and align yourself with its spirit.ย
As a recent resident of this sacred land of Aotearoa, the Land of the Long White Cloud โ๏ธ, I felt the pull to connectโnot just in passing, but in essence. And what better way to embody the spirit of the Earth ๐ than through pounamu, the treasured greenstone of the Mฤori people? Here, where our bush sanctuary DiTianTai rests, lies a region that whispers its name to me, ‘The Land of the Three Dragons ๐‘, one such dragon is the majestic Mt Manaia โฐ๏ธ. This sacred mountain, revered by the local iwi, holds profound significance for Kim and me. From the very first ascent, we felt its quiet sovereignty, an unspoken invitation into its embrace. Each visit deepens that bondโa sense of standing not before the mountain, but within its presence.ย
So when I began my search for a piece of pounamu, I sought out Manaia. In Mฤori tradition, Manaia is a guardian spirit ๐, a bridge between realms, depicted with the head of a bird, the body of a man, and the tail of a fish. It is said to traverse the elementsโsky โ๏ธ, land โฐ๏ธ, and sea ๐โacting as both protector and messenger between the seen and unseen worlds. To wear Manaia is to carry its wisdom, to walk with both grounded strength and celestial guidance โจ.ย
The piece I chose is carved from flower jade ๐, the outer layer of the stone, shaped by the relentless forces of water and minerals over time. Its intricate variations in colour and texture make it feel like an echo of the land itselfโraw, evolving, alive. To me, this is not just an ornament; it is a talisman, a key to deeper attunement with the forces that shape both nature and destiny.ย
Because to truly belong is not to take, but to receive. And when the land acknowledges you, the connection is no longer soughtโit simply is.ย
