Kiwis are returning in our neighbourhood Whangarei Peninsula!!! You can help us keep this momentum as there are still many predators about.
The national symbol of New Zealand is the Kiwi bird. They are pictured on the countryโs postage stamps. New Zealanders call themselves โKiwisโ. The Kiwi fruit is a major horticultural export from New Zealand. The New Zealand dollar is even nicknamed โthe Kiwi.โ
Story ot the Kiwi bird
Tฤne Mahuta is a deity associated with forests and trees. As Tฤnemahuta witnessed his ailing tree children, he sought aid from his brother Tฤnehokahoka, deity associated with birds who called on his bird children. Each bird declined, citing an excuse or the other. When the plea reached Kiwi, he bravely agreed, aware of the sacrifices. As Kiwi descended, Tฤne-mahuta forewarned him of losing wings and colorful feathers, destined to life on the dark damp forest floor forever. Despite the somber farewell to light and kin, Kiwi committed. Regret filled the hearts of the other birds as Tฤne-hokahoka bestowed consequences on their reluctance. Kiwi, in his sacrifice, became the cherished emblem, revered for selflessness and bravery in the forest folklore.
