REST AND RECREATION: Commute to Auckland for a Dance Performance

Our much-needed R&R is here, and it’s time for our winter entertainment!

Just 10 minutes from home, we embark on Arielle, our trusty ocean-going Sparkman Stevens. She lives in paradise too, anchored in the serene waters of our protected bay guarded by Dragon Manaia.

This afternoon, we set sail for the mouth of the estuary, preparing for the crack of dawn ‘run the gauntlet’ through the notorious ‘mad mile.’ Here, where the estuary meets the ocean, the current, wind, and tide conspire to play tricks on us mere mortals. But once we navigate through, we’re out into the vast Pacific Ocean!

The first leg of our journey is a 7-hour sail before we find any safe anchorage sheltered from the wind and waves. Yet, we’re seasoned sailors, having done this commute many times. We’ll push through the full 10-12 hour sail to anchor in one of Auckland’s several safe bays, depending on wind conditions.

Winter sails add an extra layer of excitement, with early nightfall demanding our best navigation skills. Once, we nearly got run over in the ferry lane – those ferry horns are terrifying!

Tomorrow morning, we head for our home away from home mooring at The Viaduct in the heart of Auckland CBD.

In a day’s sail, we transition from the pristine embrace of nature to the vibrant energy of city lights and urban life. It’s a thrilling change of pace, from the tranquil rhythm of the ocean to the lively heartbeat of Auckland.

For us, an escape to the city and its vibrant life is a refreshing change. The journey, with its blend of serenity and excitement, reminds us that the contrast between nature’s calm and the city’s vibrancy is the spice of life that makes our adventures interesting.
