Intrepid Explorer and Feng Shui Master—still braving the elements, though this time with a ‘Popeye arm’ (courtesy of an anaphylactic septicaemic encounter with fiery Asian wasps).

Then: Exactly 22 years ago, I was in Antarctica on “In the Wake of Shackleton” expedition, retracing his legendary journey. We crossed the Scotia Sea from Elephant Island to South Georgia in a Force 12 hurricane, riding 9-metre (30-foot) swells…

Now: Aboard our good ship Arielle, skimming the edge of the Southern Pacific as we enter the Hauraki Gulf en route to Auckland. It’s hardly rough, but heading straight into a Southerly—cold air funnelling up from Antarctica, a familiar touch from past adventures.
