After a busy week wrapping up my Singapore Feng Shui consultationsโwhich included a second apartment, an office space, and a retail shopโand completing the final touches to the Feng Shui-compliant rental properties weโve just built, itโs time to step back.
No matter how much we love our work, for those of us who are outdoor enthusiasts, nothing refreshes the spirit quite like being out in the elements. This time, itโs another commute to Auckland for a night at the philharmonic.
Sailing, to me, is the purest expression of being in flowโmy life of โwalking the Dao.โ Our usual route is to sail to the estuary mouth for the night, breaking for the Pacific at dawn, embarking on a full twelve-hour sail at first light. However, with no wind in the forecast, we faced a steady motor to Auckland instead.
Departing later than planned, Kim suggested that we sail through the night. Twelve to fourteen hours overnight? Why not! Iโm always in for an adventure, and a night passage would give us a free day in Auckland. With the moon a crescent and Venus gleaming below her, we began our quiet journey along the northern Pacific coast of New Zealand.
Special considerations come with night sailing. Totally dependent on lights from vessels. One crossed our pathโa tug towing a barge. We exchanged awareness, their foglight blinding us momentarily to ensure we did not snag their line, and ourselves setting a respectful shift in course. Taking turns on night watch, we navigated with care around known rock hazards.
Otherwise, we drifted through the calm night, untouched by the worldโs vibrations, embraced by the gentle ocean swells, the crescent moon, and the stars above. Blissโa pure, unperturbed ten hours in the rhythm of flow.
Two reflections lingered with me through the night. First, discovering Kim at this stage of life has been a gift. When many people begin to contract their horizons in Act III, we find ourselves expanding ours. Outwardly, we may seem quite different, but we are profoundly in sync. We each enrich the otherโs worldโKim has embraced my Feng Shui and Daoist wisdom, walking the Dao with me. I, in turn, have found sailing a natural extension of my love for natureโs untouched beauty, far from humanityโs dissonance. Our hearts are aligned, each exploring and embracing the new joys the other brings.
Our yacht, Arielle, is built for the ocean. Her only limit is her skipperโs imagination and skill. Likewise, our human potential is vast; we are both held and uplifted by the mindโs wisdom insights. As Homo sapiensโthe wise beingsโwe possess the capacity to live beyond limits, flowing with lifeโs true rhythm.
As we sailed, I reflected on the nature of letting go. Just as waves pass by, so does the pastโan ephemeral presence that vanishes once it has passed. In the Dao tradition, we learn to release that which no longer serves us. The past is not real; it is only a memory. It cannot touch us unless we allow it. In this realization, we find freedomโthe capacity to learn from lifeโs passing currents, yet remain untouched, untroubled by them.
We neared the islands off Auckland as predawn darkness shifted into dawn, painting the sky in shades beyond imagination.

Glad that we didnโt meet this chap up close and personal in the dark.
Arielle’s spirit and Kim is so at one with the Dao…
We didnโt encounter a single vessel after the first in the front end of our passage. The serene stillness of night, only the light of the new Moon and Venus and star studded necklace of the Milky Way for company, blissโฆ
