During my workshop,
I recounted the historical roots of Feng Shui, tracing its origins back to neolithic times when yao lines were inscribed on bone shards. Over time, this ancient practice evolved into a sophisticated system for calculating and diagnosing energies in our environment and their impact on human life.
A participant in my workshop,
a medical practitioner specializing in psychmed with an interest in spiritual practices, emphasized the value of traditional knowledge from indigenous and local communities globally. This knowledge, often practical and transmitted orally through generations, is particularly prevalent in fields like agriculture, fisheries, health, horticulture, and forestry. I concur with the view that Feng Shui is a form of traditional knowledge, rooted in practicality as it guides individuals toward a harmonious life with environmental energies.
What sets Feng Shui apart is
its longevity, spanning not just centuries but millennia. Unlike many traditional practices, Feng Shui is not only transmitted orally but also in written form, adding a unique dimension to its preservation.
The discussion in my workshop
also delved into the realm of science. As a scientist, I unequivocally consider Feng Shui a science. However, skeptics often dismiss it based on exposure to the ‘Western Feng Shui’ or ‘Fast Feng Shui’ version, which, I must agree, is ‘woowoo’ new-age interpretation that bear no resemblance to its profound origins and the rich and nuanced tapestry of traditional schools, systems and practices. This โwoowooโ distorted version, propagated by practitioners with questionable knowledge from unreliable sources, has provoked my decision to step out and address the corruption of this sacred and beneficial wisdom practice.
In conclusion,
the need to acknowledge and preserve traditional knowledge, such as Feng Shui, is crucial. While rooted in practicality, Feng Shui’s unique attributes, including its millennia-long history, written transmission, and recent mainstream exposure, warrant recognition and protection from distortion. My commitment to confronting the misrepresentation of Feng Shui stems from a desire to safeguard its true wisdom and prevent harm to those seeking its guidance.
