𝙇ì𝙘𝙝ū𝙣 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧’𝙨 𝙌𝙞. 𝙇 𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙧 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙚. 𝙏𝙬𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙨—𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙧𝙝𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙀𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙝.

Today, 17 February, is Lunar New Year (正月初一).

新年快乐 — Happy New Year.
吉祥如意 — may good fortune unfold exactly as you wish.

💫 May the first new moon open a clean gate for you.
💫 May your home be steady at the roots and bright at the threshold.
💫 May your heart be clear, your relationships harmonious, and your path guided by right timing—not force.

Lunar New Year traces back over 3,500 years to early agrarian rites in ancient China—offerings to Heaven and ancestors at the turning of the seasons, when long dormancy begins to loosen and life stirs again toward spring.
Over centuries it was refined and standardised, and it travelled throughout the Far East—becoming Tết in Vietnam, Seollal in Korea, and related New Year traditions across parts of Japan and Southeast Asia—while keeping the shared lunisolar timing and the enduring themes of renewal, family reunion, and blessings for prosperity.

In the classical tradition, the New Year is called 岁首—“the head of the year.” It is not a date chosen at random. It is a threshold: the moment when Heaven’s cycles, Earth’s seasons, and human life return to alignment. The old completes; the new begins.

Ancient texts have several terms to refer to this day but “Spring Festival” is a modern label used to distinguish the lunar New Year from the civil New Year.

And now—this connects directly to my Lìchūn (立春) post on 4 February.

There are two clocks in Chinese timekeeping, and they serve two different purposes:

𝟭) 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 (正月初一)

This is the lunisolar New Year: months begin at the new moon, while the year stays aligned to the seasons through intercalation (闰).

And here is the quiet genius of it: the Moon is the people’s clock.
For most of history—long before printed calendars and everyday timekeeping—ordinary households did not calculate the Sun’s precise seasonal positions. They read nature. And the Moon was the clearest guide written across the sky: dark moon, waxing, full, waning—an entire month visible to anyone, anywhere.

So the calendar is built for practical real life for the people:
• The Moon makes time readable for everyone.
• The Sun keeps the seasons true in the background.

That is why 正月 is “first” not by preference, but by seasonal anchoring—in most years it begins with the second new moon after Winter Solstice (冬至) (and occasionally the third if a leap month intervenes).

This is the New Year of family, rites, gratitude, and renewal—the ceremonial gate the people step through together.

𝟮) 𝗟ì𝗰𝗵ū𝗻 (立春) — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝟰 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆)

This is the New Year used in Traditional Chinese Dao Wisdom practices—the solar-term marker that initiates the year’s qi.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗜 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲:
“𝗔𝘁 𝗟ì𝗰𝗵ū𝗻, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻.”

Because Solar Terms are defined by the Sun’s position, Lìchūn marks a precise energetic inauguration—an annual “natal imprint.” This is the timing used for Chinese Astrology, annual qi transitions in Feng Shui and the operational “year code.”

So when I say:
