𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 — 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗼 

Today, I pause and listen.

The Earth speaks, though never with words.

Her language is the same as the Dao —

silent, unforced, ever-present.

Here on DiTianTai, the harmonious place where Heaven and Earth unite, I am reminded of Laozi’s wisdom:

“Man follows Earth.

Earth follows Heaven.

Heaven follows the Dao.

The Dao follows what is natural”

The Earth is more than ground beneath our feet.

She is the living embodiment of the Dao — unhurried, unforced, unbound.

Her mountains teach the art of stillness.

Her rivers, the grace of flow.

Her trees, the virtue of patience.

When we align with her rhythms, life moves without struggle.

When we forget, imbalance follows.

So today, I offer not celebration, but remembrance.

A return to the ancient understanding:

The Earth does not belong to us — we belong to her.

And when we live in reverence of this truth, prosperity, peace, and purpose become the natural order of things.

This is the Way of the Dao.

This is the quiet wisdom of Earth.

And today, I remember.

 The Mountain and the Way

One of my greatest joys is to sail the open seas and wander amidst the mountains.

Yet living in the West, I often encounter a familiar mindset — one that sees both nature and life’s challenges as something to overcome – a world that teaches us to conquer, to summit, to stand victorious upon the peak.

We are taught to “push to the summit,” “conquer the mountain,” “claim the prize.”

At sea, the language shifts but the spirit remains the same: “tame the ocean,” “battle the elements,” “endure the storm.”

In this worldview, every mountain is a goal to conquer, every ocean a proving ground. Life itself becomes a constant struggle for mastery, a race against nature and time.

But the Dao whispers another truth:

There is nothing to conquer. Neither the mountain nor the sea has a quarrel with you.
The summit is neither won nor lost, the ocean not here to be tamed — it simply is.

In the eyes of the Dao, mastery is not to impose, but of becoming.

The sage does not impose upon the world but dissolves self until there is no separation – until you are as much the mountain as the stone beneath your feet, as much the wind as the breath in your lungs.

The soft overcomes the hard. The yielding outlasts the rigid.
This is the Way.

When you move without striving, the path opens of itself.
When you release the desire to conquer, you find you already belong.

And so the sage walks, not against the mountain, but with it. Not as master, nor as servant — but as part of the endless unfolding.

In the Dao, the wise do not seek to stand atop the mountain as its master, but to move with it as a companion. Where others climb to conquer, the sage walks to understand — and in understanding, finds no mountain to conquer.

In Daoist thought, the antithesis to conquering a mountain would be becoming one with the mountain.

Instead of imposing will or force — the language of striving, resistance, and separation — the Dao teaches wu wei (無為): effortless action, or moving in harmony with the nature of things.

So rather than conquering the mountain, the Way is to harmonize with it, attune to its rhythms, understand its essence, and let it shape you as much as you shape your path across it. In doing so, there is no opposition. Only unity.

攀無所攀雲自在，
隨形入境水輕回。
山高不語心常在，
我與蒼巒共往來。

No summit to claim, the clouds drift as they will;
Following form, the stream bends and returns.
The mountain stands silent, yet dwells within the heart;
Between the green ridges, I come and go as one.

松風伴我行幽徑，
白鶴同棲影共輕。
山月無心隨夜轉，
人在巒間不見征。

The pine wind walks with me along the hidden path;
A white crane rests nearby, our shadows light as one.
The mountain moon drifts on, unburdened by intent;
Among the ridges, no conquest is seen, only presence.

Here, the mountain, the traveller, and nature dissolve into each other — the heart of Dao: no separation, no conquest, just quiet companionship.

Although Cyclone Tam has now weakened to a lower category, she lingers in her parting, cloaking the land in thunderstorms and an expansive rain band as she tracks south toward Auckland.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝗧𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸:

• Winds reached speeds of 155 km/h.
• 25,000 homes were left without power — many of them more than once, as trees toppled as quickly as crews could restore the lines.
• Cell towers were knocked out, silencing communications across entire pockets of the region.
• Relentless rain triggered widespread flooding, with many areas recording up to 110mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
• Thunderstorms raged, delivering over 750 lightning strikes across the greater Auckland area.

On Ditiantai – A Different Story

Here on Ditiantai, Tam’s veil of cloud and rain still drapes softly over the land, yet the story is strikingly different.

The only evidence of her passing lies in the quiet aftermath of our own efforts: holding down black plastic sheets across our orchard as the fiercest gusts whipped them up like aerofoils, tossing our 3–5kg stone-filled bags into the air and spilling their contents.

It was a true team effort: as Kim swiftly re-pegged the sheets, I re-bagged the stones — all fifty of them — right in the heart of the storm.

And yet, beyond this minor skirmish, not a single tree has fallen on our property. The bush stands strong and unscathed, the land quenched and vibrant. My water dragon brook brims with delight, and the garden glows, refreshed.

The difference lies not in luck, but in the wisdom of placement ⻛⽔.

While others chose to build atop exposed ridgelines or extend their dwellings out from the mountain’s flanks, ours were sited in perfect harmony with the contours of the land.

Weiji, our minor dwelling, though appearing to perch on high, is tucked securely into a gentle ridge — calm and composed, offering a commanding view of the storm, yet sheltered by nature’s design.

Jiji, our main dwelling, is nestled even deeper, cradled within the classic protective embrace of the land — the enduring configuration of:

Four Celestial Animals Formation – Green Dragon, White Tiger, Black Tortoise, Red Phoenix, plus the most auspicious ocean in front.

As the ancient texts remind us:

“藏风得水，山环水抱，藏气聚气。”

When it comes to weathering the forces of nature, location is everything.

Listening to Nature’s Symphony

There’s a rhythm to nature that only reveals itself when you learn to listen.

Living here, I’ve come to know her quiet sighs, her restless whispers, and even her wildest tempests — all part of nature’s symphonic masterpiece.

Far beyond the horizon, the sea is the first to answer the summons of the coming storm. We watch her rise, shifting from a whispered breath to a deep, rolling pulse, her foaming exhalations unfurling upon the waiting shore.

The world holds its breath, not in fear, but in reverence. Clouds gather on the horizon, sweeping inland with graceful power, draping the sky in deep, moving greys. The wind rustles through the trees, the rain dances across the earth, and the sea roars in deep resonant chords — as if the whole world is alive, awake, and speaking all at once.

From DiTianTai, cradled by the mother earth and embraced by the dragon mountain, even the fiercest storm feels less like a threat, and more like a majestic conversation between sky, land and sea.

This is no chaos. This is harmony in motion. A reminder that to live in tune with nature is to welcome both her stillness and her storms, and to be at peace within them all.

The first whisper of change did not come from the sky, nor from the forecasts, but from the sea.

Long before the storm clouds gathered, Arielle herself felt it. Her hull, usually sleek and clean, wore a cloak of weed in a very short time — a telling sign that the sea was warmer than she ought to be.

This subtle change in temperature, invisible to the eye but undeniable to those who know how to read the sea, hinted at something much larger at play. Warmer waters feed the engines of storms. When the ocean heats, the atmosphere listens. And what starts as a breath over tropical waters grows into something more — a swirling force of wind, rain, and wild energy we call a cyclone.

That weed was nature’s early messenger, long before the cyclone’s name appeared on the news.

And yes — to meet a cyclone in New Zealand’s skies in mid-April is no ordinary encounter. Our seasons no longer wear the same familiar patterns. The climate is shifting, the balance tipping, and the fingerprints of global warming lie upon each storm’s increasing strength.

Yet storms are not new. They are part of Earth’s grand design — part of the dance between ocean and sky, nourishing the land, refreshing the earth, restoring life.

What is new, what is unnatural, is the damage.

For it is not the forests, nor the wild hills, nor the deep roots of ancient trees that suffer. Out here in the native bush, the great forest elders merely sway to the rhythm of the storm, their roots grounded, their canopies singing in the wind. They embrace the deluge, drinking in the gift of rain, standing tall long after the skies clear.

It is the human-made — the square, the rigid, the unyielding — that breaks.

Storms reveal not just nature’s power, but the brittle nature of our built environments and the illusion of permanence we’ve wrapped around our lives.

And so as the winds rise and the rains fall, I sit with nature’s symphony — not in fear, but in deep, abiding awe. For this is Earth, alive and speaking. Her voice is growing louder, and it is time we learn, once again, how to listen.
